With heartfelt thanks to Ky331 at Dell Support Forums for drawing my attention to this:

From Billpstudios:

"Thanks to continued support and encouragement I’ve been hard at work at making my WinPatrol program the best it can be. For almost 12 years, WinPatrol has consistently been one of the least intrusive programs out there but I thought it was about time to optimize Scotty even more. Even though WinPatrol is written in the programming language “C” I’ve found some monitoring functions were even quicker when written directly in machine code or what we call Assembly language.

The new super optimized version will be available to the public on Monday, October 12th. To show my appreciation to everyone who has supported WinPatrol I've made the new version available early but just to PLUS members. Just go to http://www.winpatrol.com/upgrade.html. You’ll need your name and plus code which are available on the PLUS tab in the WinPatrol software. Fans of our free version will have access on Monday."

Can't wait until Monday.... So Bill is saying that in his case, Assembly is more powerful than C?

In all cases, when the code is written properly, assembly code is always more efficient than C code.

Assembly languages are different for different CPU architectures (making AMD64 assembly different than Intel x86 assembly, even though an AMD64 CPU can process Intel x86 instructions). C, on the other hand, is a structured programming language that (while still low-level) is more portable, and the code doesn't necessarily have to be changed from x86 to AMD64.

Most people don't write in assembly language. My understanding is that it's difficult to learn, it's difficult to write in, and it's difficult to debug. This explains why the Linux game designed for the KDE desktop that teaches you assembly language is written in C++ instead of assembly language...

Thanks for that explanation GT cool.gif
