Thanks a lot for posting the review. It looks like it will be much more effective than I first suspected. Things are looking good for MSE smile.gif .

Not for Symantec, McAfee nor Trend pay anti virus applications.

It works well as one of my Layered Protection applications.

Anyone now the USA/Canada release date? Seems like there are 5 other countries that have it. Not us yet?

From what I've read it's slated for release at the same time as 7. I wasn't aware that it had already gone final in other countries, makes sense though since MS primarily created it for emerging markets that have less money to pay for security and tend to have less PC security awareness, plus the fact that many of them are using netbooks and low end PC's and can't afford the system resources of more demanding security products.

it was in a blog someplace, it was released in Israel, China, & 3 others, I have to read the blog again or find it? to answer why it is out... I'll look in my history file

EDIT: I did a Google on it. here's 1 site: http://www.devilsworkshop.org/microsoft-se...s-out-of-stock/

It was formerly speculated that the beta would be limited to users from the United States, Israel, China and Brasil. This is apparently not so as it was possible to download the Microsoft Security Essentials Beta from Europe. Having said that it is clear that there is no IP check at this point in time. A Windows Live account is required to initiate the beta download of the antivirus software and it could be that there are checks in the background that check the system language or country of the Windows Live account.

Not the exact site, but its out there http://www.ghacks.net/2009/06/23/microsoft...-now-available/

Oh, well that's the beta. It's been available in the US, it's just not anymore. Probably because they feel they have enough testers (at least in the US) and they're preparing for final release.

Alert!
Thank you for your interest in joining the Microsoft® Security Essentials Beta. We are not accepting additional participants at this time. Please check back at a later date for possible additional availability.

I found it on Softpedia:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Mic...ssentials.shtml

Microsoft Security Essentials has released an update and mine automatically updated just now:
Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.1500.0
Antimalware Client Version: 2.0.6212.0
Engine Version: 1.1.4903.0
Antivirus definitions: 1.63.1684.0
Antispyware definitions: 1.63.1684.0
exile360
Yup, it's been on Softpedia for a while now, but I believe it requires a key to use it, and those were only provided to the beta testers, unless I'm mistaken.

I didn't need a key to use it.

Now at:
Antivirus definitions: 1.63.1736.0
Antispyware definitions: 1.63.1736.0

It detected and removed my Event Log Explorer yesterday: sad.gif

Cool, thanks for the info smile.gif . I wasn't aware that it didn't need a key.

As for what it detected, it could be an FP, but you might take a look at this.

Has this been released for Europe yet?
Or is it still pretty much in "testing" mode?

Beta test phase is still ongoing. Anyone outside the beta using it are doing so at their own expense smile.gif

You don't need a key to use it. Mine is from official source, as I managed to weasel my way into the beta (thx to my live account having my location somewhere within US of A ^^ ).

New build upgraded nicely over the old one. I got the notification within 15 minutes of going online and having Vista/MSE checking for updates.
noknojon

I have never been a fan of this "salesman" showing the M/soft A/Virus -
He has turned up selling other products such as this on other You Tube videos -
Each one is always better than the last - He sold PC Tools Spyware Doctor for a while and several other similar products -
His site seems to alter according to whatever he is talking about - Even if it is a free D/load or a product to sell -
If you noticed he just passed over the ones that were not detected and seemed to make a quick excuse for the reason -
He tends to push various products (not only anti virus) and if it will not work he does the quick "magician" pass over to the next part -
Although the product may (at times) be good he always has just enough information to keep you interested for just long enough -
Most of you would know him from his site, but I have only seen enough of his vids to not 100% trust his products -
I know i will get jumped on and you will say it is M/soft but unless promoted in some way it rarely gets too far out -
noknojon
Exile 360 may come back straight away -
Or give me other directions to head in -

I definetely hear what you're saying noknojon and I don't entirely disagree. He's certainly very "generous" in his reviews to say the least, but he's probably not paid since the videos are pretty amaturish. I figure he just doesn't want to anger any one and instead tries to focus on the positives of a product. While this is certainly not a very objective testing methodology it does at least help some users to determine the high points of the products he tests, and at least he doesn't completely cut out the instances that a product does fail to detect something.

So in my view, while the reviews aren't very objective, at least he's using actual exploits from actual live infections instead of an archive of old threats and at least he goes into a decent amount of detail about the products he tests, which at the very least is somewhat informative for a potential user who's shopping around smile.gif .

And biggest of all (for me at least), is that, since he's reviewing them as he does, THANK GOODNESS he's not doing comparisons of multiple products against each other as that would probably drive him nuts laugh.gif .

Matt's reviews are great if you want to get the idea how the stuff works without installing it in your own system smile.gif

Exactly, like I said previously, it's informative so it can help a user decide if the tool is the right solution for them. While these types of reviews are a bit "fluffy", they can still serve a purpose for the curious novice looking around at the tools out there and wondering what to use. I like the fact that he goes through the install, configuration and detection screens for the tools too as it shows a program's usability.
