I would do a manual reboot and run MAM again and see if it still picks them up.

Hi Bruce,

If you know what you're doing please go into Regedit and look at those keys and check the permissions. Then click on Advanced, Owner tab and click on the Administrators and then check on Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and then click APPLY and then OK.

Then quit the Registry editor and then restart it again and go back to those keys and make sure the Administrators group has FULL control.

Let me know if you find anything wrong with those permissions please.

Then run MBAM again and go to the UPDATE tab and update the program and do another Quick Scan.
Then reboot and run another HJT Scan and log.

Post back MBAM log, then the HJT log.

I have a limited experience with regedit, but willing to figure it out.

The permissions say Administrators have Full Control

When I go to the Owner tab and click on Replace owner on subcontainers and objects I get a window that says Security in the title and Unable to set new owner on Browser Settings. Access is denied.

That's fine and normal, just say OK.

Then quit Regedit and try again. This time as long as no process is holding it you should not get an error.

I tried regedit a few times. Even after rebooting. No luck on making any changes. No sign of the dll when I searched the drive.

Okay, one last try and if this does not work then we're back to where we started from, not knowing what is still on the box causing this which means it can not be trusted for anything important.

Using Regedit browse to this KEY , not the data entry on the right.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Settings

Attempt to change the OWNER and take FULL rights and delete that entire KEY in RED.

Start Internet Explore and go to TOOLS -> INTERNET OPTIONS -> ADVANCED and there you should see a button that says: Reset...

Click on that button and reset IE, then quit IE and restart it. Then quit all applications and do another MBAM quick scan and another HJT

If it's still there then it's up to you. We can continue and use some other tools to attempt to locate the cause but otherwise a complete rebuild would be a much safer approach for safety and security so that you can trust your system again.

Well, that didn't work. But, I ran CCleaner and just ran MBAM and HJT. Thoughts?

Do a full system scan with the Avira program you have running and report back it's results please. I don't think you need to reformat. I suspect it was a key problem our registry access engine couldn't deal with. Sadly, it's a very difficult to reproduce error. It could have also been corrected with the updated definitions for MBAM as well.

Anyhow, The rogue file itself is dead, and it doesn't appear to be making a comeback. So I'd like to see what Avira thinks of the situation. Also, how is the computer running to you? Is everything back to the way it used to be? If so, we have a few cleanup/tuneup tips your welcome to follow.

Yes, go ahead and remove those utilities, as you won't need them for the time being. And if you should need to make use of them again in the future, it's probably best to be guided by us when doing so.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10.

• Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  
• Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10 about half way down the page and click on the Download button.
• In Platform box choose Windows.
• Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
• Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
• Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
• Uninstall all all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE), etc...
• Browse to C:\Program Files\Java and remove the JAVA folder.
• Once ALL older versions are removed you will no longer need to remove them in the future. This update includes a new method of updating that will update the files in place. So with the next version 11 update it will actually update 10 instead of a new installation.
• Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
• Reboot your computer

Please download ERUNT and have it make a fresh backup of your registry. Then I'd like for you to turn system restore off and then back on. As the previous restore points aren't any good anyhow. And we want to begin anew.

A good defrag after removing temp files and emptying your browser cache should bring some more performance back to you.

Please run MBAM and update it - then do a Quick Scan. Fix anything found.

Reboot your computer and then after the reboot run another HJT scan and save log.

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.
Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore

• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.
• Click the System Restore tab.
• Check Turn off System Restore.
• Click Apply, and then click OK.
• Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore

• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.
• Click the System Restore tab.
• UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
• Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.
